Nonna’s living room

Nonna’s living room was part of the exhibition Illusion (reality) 2023

This piece, painted on a mirrored surface, explores the concept of illusion and reality within a familiar scene of a grandmother's living room. The painted elements appear three-dimensional and tangible, blending with the surrounding environment reflected in the mirror. This creates a dynamic negative space, where the viewer standing in front of it is tricked into seeing the painted elements as part of the actual room. The painting thus acts like a collage, merging with the reflected reality outside its frame.

The familiarity of the setting evokes comfort, grounding the viewer in a reality that feels both trusted and known. However, the tension between the familiar and the unmatching creepy elements - such as the jar with the babies heads, makes the objects appear illusory, as though they no longer belong to the safe reality they once represented. The concept of the uncanny makes what was once ordinary seem strange and otherworldly, creating an illusion within the everyday. Ultimately, the work examines how our perception of reality can be manipulated, leading us to question the authenticity of our experiences and memories.
